Historic
The Larose Forest was created in 1928, when agronomist Ferdinand Larose undertook the first conifer plantation on what was previously abandoned land.
Since the year 2000, the Larose Forest is managed by the regional municipality of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR).
Certification
The UCPR, since taking over management of the forest, has achieved FSC certification (FSC® C018800) through the Eastern Ontario Model Forest's certification program.
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a global not-for-profit organization that sets the standards for a responsibly managed forest, both environmentally and socially.
In order to maintain this certification, Larose Forest is audited
every year by an independent, third-party auditor.

Wildlife
- The management of wildlife habitat is a key component of sustainable forest management.
- Strategies for protection, maintenance and enhancement of wildlife habitat are developed using provincial wildlife management guidelines and through consultation with experts.
Forest diseases
- Many red pine plantations in Southern Ontario are experiencing decline and mortality.
- Larose Forest has developed a management strategy for its red pine plantations based upon recommendations made in “Mortality in Southern Ontario Red Pine Plantations: Causes, Consequences, and Management Options” as well as consultations with provincial forest pathologists and other Southern Ontario forest managers.
- In some cases, the decline is so advanced that a salvage harvest is prescribed in order to capture the value in the affected trees before they die.
- This plan aims to ensure long-term, sustainable management of the forest.
- It serves as a guide for the management of forest resources from 2009 to 2028.
- This plan was created in partnership with South Nation Conservation and the public.
- The forest is managed with the goal of promoting a healthy and productive forest for future generations.
- The 20 Years Forest Management Plan is available on the UCPR’s website or on request.
The Larose Forest Committee
The Larose Forest has excellent representation from organizations that have experience in forest management and its best practices.
In 2019, the committee initiated a review of the forest management plan and the protection and development plan, to ensure the goals and objectives for the Larose Forest remain relevant and to ensure that management activities are consistent with the most current science and practices.
